Employment
The Stockyards City continues to lay a strong foundation for the city’s economy. The Stockyards and the businesses around it employ hundreds of workers.
Oklahoma City, where oil was discovered in the 1920s, remains connected to the energy economy. Kerr McGee, an international oil and gas exploration and chemical company with more than $14 billion in assets, is headquartered here. Devon Energy Corp., the largest U.S.-based independent oil and gas producer also calls OK City home. So does Chesapeake Energy, the U.S.’s third largest natural gas producer.
Lopez Foods has its headquarters in Oklahoma City. It is the largest Latino-owned company in the country, producing beef and pork products.
Not surprisingly, because it is the capital of the state, Oklahoma City is home to about 38,000 government workers.
