Dining

Downtown Photo #5

Not surprisingly, Oklahoma City has a few specialties: anything beef, anything Tex-Mex (or thereabouts), beef, desserts and, did we mention beef?

Cattelman’s Steakhouse in Stockyard City is the oldest restaurant in the state, well known for its “you’ll never leave hungry” cuts of meat and desserts. Deep Fork Grill is another OKC steakhouse of note, as is Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse (the New York Yankee slugger hailed from these parts).

But, OKC is more than just red meat. Soda Pop’s Café (it is decorated in soda memorabilia, hence the name) is well known for its chicken-fried steak, a southern and western staple. Falling Water Grille features an open kitchen so you can see your food being prepared, and Flip’s Wine Bar and Trattoria, surprise, is known for its fresh pasta and Italian specialties.

An institution in OKC, and a sure member of the Weight Watchers’ hit list, is Pioneer Pies, with a full menu of entrees, and an impressive 28 kinds of pies for dessert. The Brickyard Brewery was established in 1992, making it almost “ancient” in the world of brew pubs. It has been around so long because of the quality of their beer and their food.

Of course, Oklahoma City is close to both Texas and Mexico, so Tex-Mex and southwest cuisine are available. The Iguana Lounge is one of the best known stops for Mexican food. Inside Iguana is Mango, a restaurant within a restaurant, specializing in tropical cuisine.

This is just an appetizer. OKC is home to a variety of excellent restaurants from casual to haute cuisine.
