Attraction

Downtown Photo #4

While Oklahoma City builds on its birthright as a cowtown, it also has added attractions that smooth its rough and tumble edges.

One of the most notable stops on any visit to OKC is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, which is home to numerous exhibits about the early days of the west and the men and women who forged it. It also celebrates rodeo, American Indians and the art of the west. The Oklahoma Opry features the music of the west as well as gospel, and Frontier City, a Six Flags park that includes a western theme.

State Fair Park is a hub of equine activities. It is home to many national horse shows, rodeos and other horse-related activities.

Unique to Oklahoma City is Stockyard City. Almost 100 years old, the stockyards remain the center of the cattle trade in this part of the U.S. It also has become a tourist attraction, with many western-themed shops and the Cattleman’s Restaurant, which features, of course, beef.

The Ford Center and Civic Center feature concerts and other major events, and the OKC Zoo offers numerous exhibits including Aquaticus, a display of more than 1,500 examples of marine creatures. And, be sure to see the Omniplex science center.

An interesting fixture in downtown OKC is the Myriad Botanical Gardens, which is a tropical oasis in the midst of the urban center.
